Promoting a dementia friendly community
"When caring for my husband who had Alzheimer's, I often felt very isolated. I managed to find a few support groups in other parts of Stockport and we were able to travel, by car, to attend together from our home in Heaton Norris. It would have been far more convenient if there had been a more local group, BUT these groups were our salvation.
I wanted to create a Dementia Friendly Community in the Heatons so people with dementia and their carers didn’t have to travel far for support and to raise awareness that making small changes can help people with dementia be better supported to stay involved with their communities." "It is a lifeline for both of us - we enjoy the company of volunteers, carers and cared-for as it is different every time.
Good to sit and chat - but rarely about dementia - about all sorts of things."
“This is clearly a much valued drop-in service and a real source of support for all those who attend. The club is run by some fantastic volunteers, not least Beryl, who worked tirelessly to set up this weekly drop-in.
I don't think we appreciate enough the difference that volunteers, like Beryl, can make to people's lives.” Ann Coffey MP for Stockport, Labour - June 2015
"Good to see the professionals too - put faces to folk I have talked to on the phone.
Beryl and the volunteers all make us so welcome - so all-in-all a very sociable event."
"We are really satisfied with what is provided. Its lovely, friendly place and you can share information and experiencwe with other people! "
"Everything we have / do is 'spot-on' - especially the warmth of the welcome. Full marks to all of the volunteers! "
